Anne Shippen Willing (Mrs. Charles Willing, 1710-1790)

Anne Shippen Willing was the mother of Mary Willing Byrd. She was the wife of the prominent merchant Charles Willing of Philadelphia. Mary Willing Byrd married William Byrd III of Westover in 1761. She presumably brought a portrait of her mother with her to Virginia.

Reference: “a portrait of my honored mother, as I find it was the particular wish of my lamented daughter” was left by Mary Willing Byrd to her granddaughter, Lucy Nelson, daughter of Abigail Willing Byrd Nelson (Mrs. William Nelson)
