Benjamin West (1738-1820) was from Philadelphia. He traveled to Italy to study art and settled in England permanently in 1763. He became court painter to King George III in 1762. West became a renowned history painter and was a founder of the Royal Academy of Art. He trained many American artists, including Philadelphian Matthew Pratt and Charles Willson Peale of Maryland.
