Cosmo Medici

Very little is known about Cosmo Medici or his portraits. Medici was born in North Carolina and fought during the American Revolution. Medici’s miniature (unlocated) was painted by Charles Willson Peale in 1778. Only two extant portraits are attributed to Medici. He signed and dated the portrait of Lucy Gray Briggs in 1772. He also painted her husband, Howell Briggs. Their son, Gray Briggs, recorded paying Medici for two portraits and miniatures in 1769. Medici worked in Virginia ca. 1769-1772.
