According to the Virginia Historical Society records, this portrait was identified by family tradition and descended with a portrait believed to represent William Dandridge, his brother, and a portrait of his sister. Apparently the portraits hung together at the home of William Dandridge at Elsing Green. John Dandridge was the father of Martha Dandridge Custis Washington.
Dimensions: 21 1/4 x 17 1/2 in. (53.98 x 44.45 cm.)
The subject wears a large white wig and a blue jacket. His right hand is tucked into his jacket. A corner of his hat is visible under his left arm. The canvas is an unusual size and the hat and hand are cut off in an odd place suggesting that the canvas has been cut down from its original size.
