Charles Carter (1732-1806)

Charles Carter was the son of John Carter and Elizabeth Hill Carter of Shirley and Corotoman Plantations. He was the brother of Elizabeth Hill Carter Byrd (Mrs. William Byrd III). A portrait of him was at Westover and was listed in the will of Mary Willing Byrd. Another portrait of him by John Wollaston remains at Shirley Plantation. It is possible that this was another portrait by Wollaston. The Will left “Mrs. Braxton the portrait of her father Mr. Charles Carter.” Mrs. Braxton was Mary Carter Braxton (Mrs. George Braxton). The portrait is now presumed missing or in a private collection.
