Edward Archer II (1747-1807)

Artist: John Durand
Date: 1769-1776

A date of 1776 is suggested by MESDA and the FARL; however, the subject’s father, Edward Archer, was painted during John Durand’s earlier trip to Virginia in 1769. Edward Archer II was a merchant in Norfolk. He was the son of Edward and Dinah Archer.

Dimensions: 35 x 29 in. (81.28 x 73.66 cm.)

The portraits shows a man standing by a window wearing a dark jacket and white waistcoat. His left hand rests on a large, upright book. His right elbow rests on his chair. A window provides a view of a ship at sea.
