Elizabeth Carter Berkeley was the daughter of Landon Carter and Elizabeth Wormeley. Given her age, she was probably painted shortly before her marriage at Sabine Hall where her parents resided. She married Nelson Berkeley in 1758. Nelson Berkeley lived at Airwell and was the son of Edmund and Mary Nelson Berkeley.
