Rebecca Plater was from Maryland. She married John Tayloe II of Annapolis. The daughter in the portrait could be Elizabeth (1750-1825), Rebecca (1752-1797), Anne (1753-1835), or, least likely, Eleanor (1755-1815).

The portrait represents a woman seated in a red upholstered chair wearing a silver Van Dyck-inspired gown. A pearl bow is at her neckline. A girl appears on the woman’s right wearing a blue dress with white sleeves. She holds a basket of flowers. A red curtain is on the left side of the portrait.
