Robert Bolling (1646-1709)

Robert Bolling immigrated to Virginia and married first, Jane Rolfe, and second, Anne Stith. He was the father of Robert Bolling, Jr. and grandfather of Martha Bolling Eppes. A portrait of him is said to have descended at Eppington with Eppes descendants. Another portrait of this subject survives. It is unclear if this was an original portrait or a 18th or 19th-century copy of the other portrait (or vice versa).

The location of the portrait is unknown.

According to a family history, “so many of the Eppington portraits and old relics are lost. Among the portraits was one of Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson, presented by Mrs. Jefferson to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Eppes. There were also portraits of Richard Eppes and Martha Bolling, father and mother of Francis Eppes, and also a portrait of colonel Robert Bolling and his wife Ann Stith.”
