Susannah Stuart Fitzhugh Knox was the daughter of Thomas Fitzhugh and Sarah Stuart Fitzhugh of Boscobel and the granddaughter of Henry Fitzhugh (1687-1758). She married William Knox of Windsor Lodge in 1767.

The subject wears a gold dress trimmed with lace and with double flounces. She has a white stomacher. A blue drape trimmed with silver is around her left arm. She wears a four strand pearl necklace and has pearls, a jewel, and a black plume in her hair. Her right hand holds flowers. She is turned slightly to her left with her hand angled toward her right. She is inside a painted oval frame.
