David Lyde was the son of Elizabeth Gwynne Lyde and her first husband, Stephen Lyde. He was the stepson of John Tayloe I. The portrait descended in the Tayloe family.

The portrait represents a young boy wearing a gray jacket trimmed in silver with jeweled clasps. An orange-red drape is wrapped around him. His right hand is on his hip and he holds a cardinal in his left hand.
