Cosmo John Alexander (1724-1772) was a Scottish artist who came to the colonies in 1765. He painted portraits in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Rhode Island between 1765 to 1770. He worked in Virginia between 1770-1771 before returning to Scotland, where he died. He was an early teacher of the American artist Gilbert Stuart, who accompanied him to Scotland.
