Dr. John de Sequerya (1712-1795)
(1745-1750)
William Dering (active ca. 1735-1751) was active in Virginia from ca. 1737-1750. He appears in Philadelphia newspapers in 1735 and 1736 as a dancing master and teacher. However, no known paintings by Dering are from Pennsylvania. After leaving Virginia around 1750, he traveled to Charleston. There are no extant portraits by Dering from South Carolina. Dering’s signed portrait of Mrs. Dury Stith is the basis for all of the current attributions.
