Elizabeth Hill was the daughter of Edward Hill III and Elizabeth Williams Hill. She inherited Shirley Plantation along with her husband, John Carter, whom she married in 1723. After his death, she married Bowler Cocke. It is difficult to tell her age in this portrait. There is a chance that she was painted in England in the 1700s-1710s when her parents were painted. She does not appear to have been painted by the same artist who painted her first husband, John Carter, whose portrait also hangs at Shirley Plantation. Elizabeth Hill Carter Cocke’s children include Charles Carter, who inherited Shirley Plantation, and Elizabeth Hill Carter, who married William Byrd III.
