James Gordon was a Scottish immigrant who arrived in Virginia in 1738. He established a plantation at Gordonsville in the 1740s. He married first, Milicent Conway, and second, Mary Harrison.

The subject wears a white wig and a brown jacket with a black waistcoat. His right hand is tucked into his waistcoat and his left hand rests on a stone plinth. Behind him is a rocky outcropping. Beyond is a view of a forest landscape. His turned towards his right. The portrait is dated on the back but the last digit is illegible.
