John Lewis was the son of Fielding Lewis and his first wife, Catharine Washington Lewis. This portrait was commissioned by the father to hang at Kenmore between 1772 and 1775.

The subject wears a red coat and waistcoat with gold trim. HIs left elbow rests on a table with his hand over an unpright book. HIs left hand is on his hip. The book is labeled “THOMSON’S/SEASONS.” The table has a green cloth over it.
