Martha Tucker was the daughter of Robert Tucker and Joanna Corbin Tucker of Norfolk. She married Thomas Newton, Jr. Thomas Newton III was their eldest son.

The portrait represents a woman wearing a pink sack-back dress with ruching, silver trim, and lace. She wears a sheer fichu, a lace necklace, large earrings, and a lace cape with flowers. A large floral brooch is attached to her neckline. A young child sits on her lap. She holds his left hand with her left hand. Her right arm is around his shoulders. The baby wears white and blue drapes. He wears a coral necklace. His right arm touches the flowers on his mother’s bodice. Tasseled green curtains are on either side of the subjects. A ledge runs behind them.
