Sarah Ball McCarty (Mrs. Dennis McCarty, 1705-1786)

Sarah Ball McCarty was the wife of Dennis McCarty (1703-1742/43). Her daughter was Sarah McCarty Johnson.

Dimensions: 9 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (74.9 x 62.2 cm.)

The subject wears a dark dress with a sheer fichu and a white cap tied under her chin with a ribbon. She holds a small, round box, probably snuff box, in her right hand. She is turned three-quarters to her left inside a painted oval.

This portrait is in the collection of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution and is currently on long-term loan to The Lyceum, Alexandria, Virginia.
