Sarah McCarty Johnston (Mrs. George Johnston, b. 1729)

Sarah McCarty was the daughter of Dennis McCarty and Sarah Ball McCarty. She married George Johnston, a prominent lawyer and politician in the Alexandria area. Their country home was Belvale, which he built in the 1760s and their town home was in Alexandria.

The subject wears a blue dress trimmed with lace and embellished with a jeweled clasp. She wears a lace necklace and holds up a flower. She is inside a painted oval. The portrait is inscribed: “”AE36 1765″
