Thomas Atkinson was the son of Roger and Anne Pleasants Atkinson of Mansfield Plantation.

The portrait represents a young boy wearing a blue jacket with a white waistcoat. He holds an apple in his right hand and a basket of apples in his left hand. Foliage appears on the left of the canvas. On the right is a detailed view of the family’s Mansfield Plantation with a large home, an outbuilding, and a picket fence.
